Bike to finish MS weekend 2011

After 6 months of training hard work and lots of planning and laughing along the way Brad completed the 100mile 2 day bike to finish MS event last weekend in Mission Bay San Diego.

Our journey started Friday we had bags packed and ready to go all we needed was ice and a bike and we were ready to hit the road. I went to get Breven at school and he came walking out to me holding his hand funny and in tears. He had hurt his finger and it was all swollen and bruised! I asked him what happened he said he got hurt at lunch the regular office clerk was at lunch and so they gave him ice and sent him back to class. He had a sub and couldn't write and they didn't send him back to get checked. By the time he got to me it was horrible and so I took one look at him and said he had to go to extended care and get an x-ray in case it was broken or broke into his hand. We were all so upset by the lack of caution or notice that we got. I got a phone call when he took a basketball to the face but not for this. Well almost 2 hours later we found out it was not broken and that after the swelling goes down they may have a hairline fracture.

So now we hit the road 2 hours later than planned making for one ticked off hubby and 2 hungry kids. We were on the road in traffic for 2 hours and poor Breven we had to let him go pee in a water bottle because we were trapped in the carpool lane due to a 5 car accident! We made it to our night 1 stop at my Grandmas house in Seal Beach and enjoyed a great dinner and some family time.

Saturday morning we were up nice and early at 5:00am to leave and be in Irvine at the start line. We met team members checked him and and then watched as he took off. We then loaded in the car and headed towards Carlsbad our night 2 stop. We arrived at the resort(which by the way the Sheraton Carlsbad next to Legoland is awesome and has great service and was the best hotel ever) we checked in and put our things in the room and headed to the finish line to wait for Brad. We met some relay great people with MS who were so encouraging and so nice and they were very positive when we told them he has MS and was riding they cheered extra loud for Brad.

Brad rode in and his time was about 3.5 hours to complete 55miles! We congratulated him and sent him to the room to rest, shower and hit the massage tents. The rest of us hit the Legoland aquarium(don't waste your money! we got $10 tickets and I was ok with spending that but the $20 it normally costs not worth it) The kids loved the fish and the octopus. We did discover that Legoland has a shopper pass you let them hold your credit card info and you get 1 hour to shop free of charge as long as you return in the time slot. Breven, Aubree and I got some cool Lego goodies!

We headed back to the hotel freshened up and joined the power peddlers for dinner and music. After we ate as a family my mom took my kids back to the room(I love my mom best support team ever) and Brad and I got to stay around for the Jersey fashion show, drinks and the VIP fundraising lounge. Brad raised $2600 as of today!

Sunday morning we said goodbye to Brad at 7am and we cleaned up packed up and headed out to the last stop at mission bay. We fed the kids and headed to the beach to wait for Brad to finish. We bought our MS swag and bracelet's and again met some more wonderful people and their families touched by MS like us. One man got off his bike took the hand of his mom and she and he crossed the finish line together she is walking with a cane and has had MS for over 20 years. It brought a tear to my eye.

Brad crossed the finish line a little over 3.5 hours again. We welcomed him with home made signs and lots of cheering! He got his medal and we had lunch and headed home.

We are all so proud of Brad! He is in line to be a top 150 fundraiser from this year which means he gets an automatic entry in next years challenge and no entry fee. Being so inspired by him I decided to take the next year to train to join him and his team maybe doing the 150 challenge!
